:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deborah McCann Connors -- Truth is better than fiction : John Clifford was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, under George Balanchine. He was a remarkable talent as a dancer and, as this book reveals, an equally remarkable teacher and choreographer, not just in New York but as director of his own company in Los Angeles. This memoir tells the reader a lot about the real world of the professional dancer. Clifford is in a privileged position to talk about Balanchine’s unique contributions to American dance. Balanchine took him under his wing, giving him challenging roles and inviting him to teach and choreograph for the company. What emerges is a fascinating, riveting history of a golden time in ballet by someone who learned from the best and seeks to share that knowledge. Beautifully written and filled with excellent illustrations, this is a must read for any dancer or dance enthusiast. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Erstwhile -- An entertaining insight into ballet and the life of one of it's major participants! : This memoir of John Clifford's career and his time with Balanchine is totally readable and accessible to even a non-dancer such as myself. As a fan, and the father of a dancer, I did know a bit about the art form, but I emerged from reading this book knowing a lot more. Clifford not only provides an excellent view of Balanchine the man and what it was like to work with him, but also includes portraits of the major dancers of the time, in the process clearing up many errors and misconceptions. There have been very few ballet memoirs written by men (Jacques D'amboise comes to mind); Clifford's book also fills a gap in this area. Remarkably, Clifford is not a professional writer, but he has succeeded in writing a memoir that would make a professional proud. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in dance. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scaramouche -- Interesting and entertaining book : John Clifford is a gifted choreographer in his own right, and was one of the most exciting dancers of the late 1960s and 1970s, when he danced principal roles with New York City Ballet and his own company, the original Los Angeles Ballet. I just finished reading his new book, "Balanchine's Apprentice", and I encourage everyone to read it who has any interest in Balanchine, New York City Ballet, the original Los Angeles Ballet, and the great dancers of the 1960s and 1970s who performed with those companies. Clifford is an engaging writer with a seemingly unending store of fascinating stories about his life in ballet. His professional, artistic, and personal relationship with George Balanchine, arguably the greatest choreographer of the twentieth century, was unique, and his insights about Balanchine, choreography, dancing, NYCB, and ballet in general are fascinating to read. I hope this will not be Mr. Clifford's only book, and I look forward to reading any others he may write. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Denise -- Lovely, moving fascinating book about a genius : Great book for anyone interested in understanding more about Balanchine’s approach to dance, written with clarity and great warmth. To be honest, anyone interested in the creation of ballet should read this book to give insight into the work, creativity and the discipline that goes into choreographing. Clifford is it once respectful, yet lighthearted in his approach, chronicling many interesting details about working with the master himself. I devoured this book, and can’t wait to watch a Balanchine ballet with a new, deeper understanding of the ideas behind creating them, thanks to this gift of a book. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon customer Chicago -- Wonderful read about Balanchine by Clifford who was really there. : I loved his style - his writing sounds like he is talking to the reader. I am a bit older but grew up in Hollywood so his Los Angeles years are filled with people I knew or knew about. I was in NYC at the end of the 1950's and saw many of the dancers and ballets he describes so well. Thank you for sharing your remarkable life with us John Clifford - what a CV you have!! Wow! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from patrick culliton -- A beautiful book : This is a beautifully written book about the brilliant, enigmatic, ballet genius, George Balanchine. It is also the story of a young man who was born to be a soloist, a principal dancer and a choreographer for Balanchine's New York City Ballet -- and he actually became all that. This book gave me the clearest picture of George Balanchine I have ever had. It's better than a documentary. Every page taught me, entertained me, and the perfect quotes from Balanchine that John Clifford gives us are the punch lines -- and there are a lot of them. They reveal a great heart, a great mind, and a very great wit. I think that even people for whom ballet is off the beaten path could really enjoy this because it takes one into a magical world. I have bought multiple copies and given them all away. All but my own copy of "Balanchine's Apprentice" which I have read cover to cover twice and I'll read it again -- because who doesn't like to spend time in a magical world and learn about the most creative man in that world. I wish I could express myself as well as Clifford does. Putting it in my own cave man language, BUY THIS BOOK!. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )

Clifford is passionate, talented, and also inclined to see the best in the people around him. An important addition to your dance library. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021 )
